In this short Tuesday episode, Jay and Kristin Nagel discuss some of the interesting things going on this week, including a new EU AI law, their thoughts on the hit Netflix movie “Leave the World Behind”, and more.

Main Discussion Points:

– The EU has reached a deal on a sweeping AI law called the AI Act. It will require companies to label AI-generated content and design systems so AI content can be detected. This could have major implications as EU laws often make their way to the US.

-The current #1 Netflix movie in the US is “Leave the World Behind” starring Julia Roberts, Mahershala Ali, and Ethan Hawke. Jay did not like the movie but Kristin gave it an 8/10. There seems to be two camps – people who liked it and people who think it absolutely sucked.

Jay Schwedelson:

Foreign we're back for our short what's up this Week Tuesday episode. Now, just to remind everybody, because we're testing out some new formats. We still have our Wednesday Ask Us Anything episodes.

And on Friday we release our longer episodes where we talk about real tactics and all that type of stuff. But here's where we talk about things that are going on this week that are interesting to us or stuff we want to think about.

And I'm here with the great Kristen Nagel, who is lead producer on do this, not that. Kristen, how are you?

Kristin Nagel:

I'm doing good. Just got some coffee. How are you doing?

Jay Schwedelson:

I'm doing good. We're steamrolling towards New Year's now. That's where we're at. And we'll, we'll get into that in one second.

But in terms of actual business stuff and new stuff that's going on, I saw something this week that I think is really interesting. So over in Europe, the EU lawmakers have reached a deal on something called the AI act, which I think is going to be a game changer.

It is the world's first really sweeping AI law. So let me tell you what it's all about, and then I'm going to get reaction to it.

So the law, among other things that it's going to do, it's going to require that companies and organizations label things that are deep fakes or that are AI generated content. And you have to design all your systems in such a way that AI generated information can be detected.

You're going to have to make it allowable to be detected that something that was created by AI. Now, why do I think that this is so important?

Generally speaking, what happens over in Europe in terms of laws like gdpr, in terms of what happened with data, is it makes its way over to the US and the rest of the world. They kind of lead the charge on legal things.

And this AI act, which I'm a big fan of, really will make us make AI something that is more regulated, which is good. But also in terms of content, it's not going to be this wild, wild west, which it is now.

This will take, you know, six months, a year for it really to all kick in. But there's going to be labels that this was AI generated. You're going to have to actually be upfront about it.

So I think that's when you know, what do you think?

Kristin Nagel:

I agree. I think that there needs to be some types of border, you know, like some type of guidelines around this before it gets crazy.

Because we're on a fast track to craziness with AI. So I think this is a good start.

Jay Schwedelson:

Yeah, it is good.

And also it's getting, like, even annoying on social media, even on LinkedIn, you know, you'll see comments on posts that you know are not written by a person. And it's so cheesy and lame. And that's just at the very, very bottom of all of it. I mean, there's.

It's all over the place and we'll see if it makes its way into the U.S. but the fact that in Europe you're going to have to label things that are generated with AI, I think that could be a game changer. So that's called the, the AI act. So it's really interesting to see that that's now moving along.

So let's talk about something that blew my mind this week and you probably have no idea about. Do you know what the number one movie on Netflix is in the US Is right now?

Kristin Nagel:

Is it Leave the World Behind?

Jay Schwedelson:

Yes.

Kristin Nagel:

Okay.

Jay Schwedelson:

It is. Wait, the best part about this, this podcast thing is Chris and I do not talk to each other beforehand at all. Right.

Kristin Nagel:

0 I'm caught up on the trends, Jay.

Jay Schwedelson:

Well, I know you are. I am not. So I saw this movie. Did you see this movie?

Kristin Nagel:

I did. I watched it.

Jay Schwedelson:

All right, so for everybody, it's on Netflix. Number one movie in the world. It's with Julie Roberts, Mahershala Ali and Ethan Hawke.

I want to know what you think about the movie before and don't ruin it for what do you think about the movie? And let me tell you what I think about the movie.

Kristin Nagel:

Okay? I know a lot of people are dogging on this movie, but I think it's different. I think, I thought it was cool.

I think the editing was cool and the ending. I won't say anything, but I wasn't the biggest fan. But I did like the movie. I'll give it an 8 out of 10.

Jay Schwedelson:

This movie was horrendous.

Kristin Nagel:

Feeling you were gonna say.

Jay Schwedelson:

This movie was horrible. This movie was very long and I thought it was going to turn into a horror movie. I cannot watch a horror movie.

The last horror movie I saw was Blair witch project like 20 some odd years ago. I had to sleep with the lights on for three days and I thought it was going to go there. Thank God it's not a horror movie. It's just a bad movie.

And I don't understand. When I saw all the people of the cast, I'm like, oh my God, these people are all very famous. This has to be incredible.

And then I'm like, this movie sucks. But. But you're right, there's like two camps. Some people really into it and you should watch it. Some people like me, like, this sucks.

So I don't know that that kind of blew my mind. That was number one in the world. But I think it's just because we're all sitting at home with time in our hands. Like, what should we do?

Not talk to each other. That's for sure. Watching this movie anyway. All right, that's it for all this craziness.
